GREENE, FRANCIS VINTON

(1 850), army officer; b. Providence, R.I. Graduating from West Point in 1870, he entered the artillery as second lieutenant and was transferred to the engineers. He became major-general of volunteers in 1898. From 1877 to 1879 he served as U.S. military attaché at St. Petersburg, and was with the Ru ian army in the Ru o-Turkish war, witne ing the decisive battle of Plevna among other engagements. He was police commi ioner of New York City from 1903 to 1904. His contributions to military literature included works on Ru ia and her army, the Revolutionary War, Mi i ippi campaigns of the Civil War, and a life of General Nathaniel Greene.
