piks, n. (Rom. Cath. Ch.) The box in which the host kept a box used, in English coinage, as a place of deposit for sample coins taken for a trial of the weight and finene of metal, before they are sent from the mint. (Naut.) The box in which the compa is suspended. [L. and Gr. jjyxis, a box, esp. of box-wood, Gr. puxos, L. buxus, the box-tree, or box- Pyx. wood see Box.] followed by u, the 2 letters together being pronounced like kiv, except in some words in which the u is silent.
