Gnat

(not) - dipterous insect, the Culex pipiens, differing but slightly from the common mosquito, with which it is popularly confounded. The "bite " consists in a piercing of the skin and the withdrawal of a minute quantity of blood. The gnat has no sting or poison-glands.
