Fret

(frět.) [ From A.S. fr eth an, to ornament.] (Med.) Same as HERPES, q. v.-(Her.) A bearing composed of six bars, cro ed and interlaced: - sometimes termed a true lover's knot.-(Arch.) An ornament consisting of two lists, or small fillets, variously interlaced or interwoven, and running at parallel distances equal to their breadth.- (pl.) (Mus.) Certain short pieces of wire fastened to the finger-boards of guitars, & c., at right angles to their strings, and which, as the strings are brought into contact with them by the pre ure of the fingers, serve to vary and determine the pitch of the tones.
