a narrow pas: sage about 500 feet deep through the Cumber land Mountains; between Kentucky and Tenne ee and at the W. extremity of Virginia. It was occupied by the Confederate Genera _ Zollicoffer in his retreat Nov,.13, 1861. On March 22, 1862, the Unior forces attacked without definite re sults, but on June 18 occupied_the« Gap. On Sept. 17, however, the Fed. eral General Morgan was compellec to retire, the Confederate Genera!
