(Latin sanctus, ‘holy’), title given to great Christians, especially martyrs; in New Testament means sanctified ones rather than (in our sense) saintly; from about VI. cent. specially applied as now to the dead. Honor paid to s’s is an important side of Catholic piety, but is generally rejected as superstitious by Protestants. _ In R.C.
