Francis (2 son of Edward Oates of Mean wood side, Yorkshire). b. Mean wood side 6 April 1840; matric. from Ch. Ch. Oxf. 9 Feb. 1861; collected birds and insects in Central America 1871; F.R.G.S. 1872; sailed with his brother W. E. Oates from Southampton for Natal 5 March 1873; left Maritzburg 16 May 1873 and explored the Matabele country north of the Limpopo river; started again 3 Nov. 1874, arrived on the banks of the Zambesi 31 Dec., after collecting many objects of natural history. d. of a fever near the Makalaka kraal, about 80 miles north of the Tati river 5 Feb. 1875.
