Hurricanes

Violent whirlwind storms that pa over the W. Indies. As they travel individually over the whole N. Atlantic Ocean, e. America and w. Europe, the name is frequently applied to any extensive rotatory storm occurring over this wide region. As similar storms occur in other parts of IMG:content-0685.png:[blocks in formation] the world, it is sometimes used as equivalent to any extensive violent whirlwind.-Also, the intensity of any wind of great and destructive violence: specifically restricted in meteorology to winds of the force of 12 on the Bradford scale or 10 on the decimal scale, or exceeding 80 miles per hour or 40 meters per second on the absolute scale.
