Slip

That amount by which a mechanism falls short of its theoretical performance, with regard to something to which it is not rigidly connected, generally expre ed as a percentage of the theoretical amount; as, the slip of an induction motor or ofa pump. |: FALA 2. in an induction motor, the difference between the actual speed of the rotor and synchronous speed. The speed of the rotor is lower than that of the revolving field, because the lines of force must cut the secondary conductors. This difference, called the slip, is measured in per cent of the speed of the revolving field which is known as the synchronous speed.
