munjistin

[Mod. Lat. ( Rubia ) munjist (a); -in ( Chem.).] Chem.: C8H8O3. An orange coloring matter found in munjeet. Itis a ociated with purpurin (C3H6O3) in the root, and is nearly related to it in compos i tion. It is prepared by boiling the root with a solution of sulphate alumina, decomposing extract with hydrochloric acid, and digesting the precipitated coloring matter with carbonic disulphide. It is obtained in the form of brilliant golden-yellow plates, which are moderately soluble in cold, but readily so in boiling, water and hot alcohol. Boiled with alumina, it forms a beautiful lake of a bright orange color, which is soluble in soda. The colors obtained are are rendered moderately permanent by the use of mordants.
