One who has borne supreme witne to the name of Christ by dying rather than deny it. Those who thus died under pagan persecution have always been held in highest honor; their numbers are very variously estimated; that of the victims of Christian persecution, chiefly 1200-1600, is probably much greater.-In modern usage, the name indicates those who die for any form of truth or duty.
