Nikolai, b. Kiev, Ru ia, May 28, 1886; conductor; came to America at early age; studied Yale School of Music, also vin. with Loeffler; played in Boston Symph., cond. newly organised Cleveland Orch. from 1918 for a decade and a half; founded and led N. Y. Orch. for several seasons; has appeared as guest with London Symph., orchs. in Chicago, Cincinnati, Phila., San Francisco and elsewherc; national dir. of Fed. Mus. Proj.; 1938-9 cond. Seattle Symph. Orch. Sokolov (sd’-k6-l6f), Nicholas, Petersburg, March 26, 18°9—March 27, 1922; pupil at the Cons.; taught harm. in the Imp. Chapel; c. an elegy (op. 4), and intermezzo for orch., etc. Soldat (zdl’-dit), Marie, b. Graz, March 25, 1864; violinist; pupil of Pleiner and Pott, and of Joachim, 1889; m. Herr Réger (Vienna). 1887 she founded a women’s string quartet and toured widely.
