Caxton, William

the first English printer, born in Kent, bred a mercer, settled for a time in Bruges, learned the art of printing there, where he printed a translation of the "Recuyell of the His to ryes of Troyes," and "The Game and Playe of Che e"; returning to England, set up a pre in Westminster Abbey, and in 1477 i ued "Dictes and Sayings of the Philosophers," the first book printed in England, which was soon followed by many others; he was a good linguist, as well as a devoted workman (1422-1491).
