[Dimin. from sole (2), s. (q. v.)] Ichthy.: Solea minuta, a European species often taken in the British Channel, but rarely brought to market, owing to its small size. It is about five inches long, of a reddish-brown color, with rudimentary pectoral fins. Called also the Dwarf Sole. Sō-len-hō-fen, s. [See def.] Geog.: A village of Bavaria, situated on the Altmühl, about nine miles from Eichstadt. Solenhofen-beds, s. pl . Geology: Beds consisting chiefly of a fine fi ile slate, used for lithographic purposes, found at Solenhofen and Eichstadt. It is probably of the age of the English Kim me ridge Clay, or of the Coral Rag. It has beautifully preserved the numerous fo ils which it contains. They include Fishes, Reptiles, Archæopteryx, (q. v.), . sō-len-I-dæ, s. pl. [Lat. solen; fem. pl. adj. suff. idœ.! Zool. & Palæont .: A family of Sinu-pallial i a (q. v.), with three recent genera, Solen, Sole curt us, and Cultellus. Shell elongated, gaping at both ends; ligament external; hinge-teeth usually 2,3. Siphons short and united (in the long-shelled genera), or longer and partly separate (in those with shorter shells). It appears first in the Carboniferous rocks.
