(pur’pu-rah) [L. “ purple’’]. A disease characterized by the formation of purple patches on the skin and mucous membranes, due to subcutaneous extravasation of blood. p. angioneurot’ica, a disorder marked by cutaneous hemorrhages, hyperesthesia, an gio neurotic edema, and gastric crisis. p. annul a’ris telangiecto’- des, a skin affection of young males marked by an eruption of the lower limbs below the knees, which is at first telangiectatic, then purpuric, and finally atrophic. The appearance of the eruption is preceded by rheumatic pains. B. bullo’sa, pemphigus hemorrhagic us. p. ful’minans, a rapidly fatal purpura of young children. p. hemorrha’gica, a severe form of purpura with cop i- and Wrerlhoff’s disease. Henoch’s p., an obscure disease seen chiefly in children, marked by a purpuric eruption complicated with intestinal disturbances, such as pain, diarrhea, and vomiting, rheumatism and swelling of the joints, hemorrhages from mucous membranes, and often by splenomegalia. Called also p. nervosa. p. iod’ica, a purpuric eruption usually on the lower extremities, sometimes accompanying the use of iodids. Landouzy’s p., a form with grave systemic disturbances.. Maculo’sa. Ῥ. pulico’sa, the formation of purplish spots, or laches bleudtres, due to the bites of insects. p. rheum at’ica, purpura with severe pains and fever.
