Admixture of Cart hag in i ans. Romans and Greeks, with an old Mauretanian base; incorporated with the Arabs. Under Tarik they invaded Spain 711 and established the Caliphate of Cordova. They were defeated by Alfonso of Leon 1144, and by Ferdinand 1232-48; founded the kingdom of Granada 1238, to defend which 200,000 came from Africa 1327 and were defeated by Alfonso 1340. Granada was taken and the Moors extirpated by Ferdinand 1492. They attained a high degree of civilization.
