Cocaine

(ko’-kain). A powerful local anæsthetic, much used by oculists and dentists. It enlarges the pupil of the eye. The hypodermic injection of cocaine produces severe symptoms in some people, and antidotes (amyl nitrite and morphine) should always be at hand. Also given as a nerve stimulant.
