water spaniel (water span"yel)

The name given to two varieties of the dog called spaniel, namely, the large water-spaniel and the small water-spaniel. See spaniel, 1. water-sparrow (water-spar"ō), n. 1. The reed-bunting or reed-sparrow, Emberiza schœni clus. [Prov. Eng.] -2. A reed or sedge-warbler of the genus Acrocephalus, as A. streperus or A. phragmitis. [Prov. Eng.] or succe ively; and this is to be expected, for a series of separate and independent gyrations are likely to arise when the air is in a state of instability, such as is required for the development of these whirlwinds. This is especially the case in tropical and equatorial regions, where waterspouts are most frequent. Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts . Ps. xlii. 7. batidæ; a water-skipper: so called from their long, slender, straddling legs and aquatic habits.
