Hermaphroditus

Son of Hermes and Aphrodite. The nymph of the fountain Salmacis embraced him as he was bathing; pursuant to her prayer, both sexes were joined in his person. Hermes, by Praxiteles (restored). gymnastic games; inventor of the lyre, the alphabet, music, and measures; originally worshiped in Arcadia. He wears a winged hat and winged sandals, and bears the herald's staff. See MERCURY.
