Wolcott, Roger

was born in Boston, July 13, 1847. He graduated from Harvard in 1870, being orator of his cla , and at once entered upon the study of law, graduating from the Harvard Law School in 1874. He served as a member of the Boston Common Council, 1877-1879, and in 1882-1884 sat in the House of Representatives. In 1892 he was elected Lieutenant-Governor, and upon the death of Governor Greenhalge, March, 1896, became chief executive of the State. In the following year (1897) he was elected Governor, a position he was holding when, in July, 1900, General William F. Draper resigned his post of Minister to Italy, to which Mr. Wolcott was immediately appointed by President McKinley.
