Bunyan

JOHN, (bun'yan,) the celebrated author of Pilgrim's Progre , B. at Elstow, 1628, after a di olute youth joined the Baptists, and suffered a long imprisonment on account of his religious opinions. D. 1688. His great work was partly written in Bedford Gaol. The 10th edition appeared in 1685. No book but the Bible, and the " Imitation of Jesus Christ," has been translated into so many languages, and it has as long been the delight of the educated and refined, as it was at first of the poor and ignorant. B.'s Holy War, as an allegory, is only surpa ed by the " Pilgrim." [s. 123]
