Town in Argentine Republic 620 m. n.w. of Buenos Ayres, at an altitude of 2,559 ft. Its chief buildings IMG:content-1305.png:[graphic] IMG:content-1306.jpg:[graphic][merged small] Bach's influence is visible in his motets, and especially his oratorios, St. Paul , 1836, and Elijah , written for the Birmingham festival, 1846. He traveled in Italy in 1830, became director of the Lower Rhenish festivals 1833, was Municipal Director of Music in Dü eldorf 1833-35, became conductor of the Gewandhaus concerts in Leipzig 1835, and founded the Leipzig conservatory 1843. He produced his music to the Anti gone of Sophocles 1841. His admiration for Weber as a lad helped to turn his thoughts toward the romantic school of composition, to which he contributed strong props with his Midsummer Night's Dream , five symphonies, a violin concerto (still the most generally admired work of its kind), two pf. concertos (G minor and D minor), and especially his Songs Without Words .
