Areca

ar′ē-ka, n. a genus of palm, one species of which, the Betel-nut Palm, or Penang Palm ( Areca catechu ), bears nuts with austere and astringent properties, which are chewed by the Malays with a little lime in a leaf of the betel-pepper, making the lips and spittle red.
