(hia’-gé-min), (1) Maurits Leonard, Zutphen, Sept. 23, 1829— Dutch East Indies, 1900; violinist and pianist; pupil of Bru els Cons.; 1865-75 dir. Cons., Batavia; 1875 founder and dir. of a Cons., Leeuwarden; c. oratorio “‘Daniel,’’ etc. (2) Richard, b. Leeuwarden, Holland; composer, conductor; son of (1); studied with his father, and at Gevaert; a t. cond. Amsterdam Op., at 16; came to U. S. in 1906 as accompanist for Yvette Guilbert; a t. cond. Met. Op., N. Y., 1908-21; has also cond. at Chicago Op., Ravinia and Los Angeles Op.; and has appeared with Amer. orch.; c. ‘“‘Capons acc hi’’ (based Browning’s ‘‘Ring and the Book,” Good rich), prem iére, Freiburg, Germany, 1931; later at Vienna, and was prod. by Met. Op. Co., in English, 1936-37; he again cond. with latter co. in 1936; known also as composer of many songs.
