BATTLE OF, was the final blow to Carthago in the second Punic War. The Roman general Puolius Cornel i us Scipio, who had been so succe ful in Spain, invaded Africa, and thus obliged Hannibal to evacuate Italy in order to hurry home for the defence of Carthage, with the result that Scipio completely defeated him at Zama in 202 B.C. Peace was made forthwith, and Carthage gave up all her po e ions outside Africa, and pledged herself not to engage in any war without the consent of the Roman Senate. That is to say, the Semitic race had failed to wrest the Mediterranean from the Aryan.
