—Title of lords of Vienne who were called ‘Dalphinus’, (Delphin us) in XII. and XIII. cent’s. When Dauphiné came to Fr. crown, 1349, title of Dauphin was bestowed on king’s eldest son; crest contained a dolphin (dauphin).. ancient province, §.E. France; capital, Grenoble; formed part of kingdom of Burgundy; now comprised in departments of Dréme, Isére, and HautesAlpes.
