guttidet (guttid)

[ guttifer : see gut tiferous .] A plant of the order Guttifera . Guttiferæ (gu-tif'e-re), n. pl. [NL., fem. pl. of guttifer: see guttiferous.] An order of trop ical polypetalous trees and shrubs, nearly allied to the Hypericacea, with resinous juice, opposite leathery leaves, and unisexual or polygamous flowers. There are 24 genera and about 240 species, nearly all American or Asiatic. The order yields many gum-resins, as gamboge, etc., some edible fruits, as the mangosteen and mammee-apple, many oily seeds, and some valuable timbers. The more important genera are Garcinia, Clusia, Calophyllum, and Mammea.
