Elysium

or Elysian Fields, the name of a fabulous region which the ancients supposed to be the residence ‘of the ble ed after death. Elysium is supposed by Homer to have been at ‘the extremities of the earth; other peets placed it in the Fortunate Isdands (the Canaries). It had a serene and cloudle sky, while a soft celestial light shed a — brilliancy over every object. The favored herces here lived happily under the rule of ‘the just Rhadamanthus and exercised | themselves in wrestling and other contests, danced to the sound of the lyre from which Orpheus drew enchanting tones, or wandered through groves, on the smiling banks of the Eridanus.
