(ook'ran,) (The.) [Slav., a frontier.] A region of Little Ru ia, consisting of the modern govts. of Poltawa, Kiev, Kharkoff, and Tchernigoff, and noted for its extensive plains, on which browse immense herds of horses and cattle. The name originally denoted that frontier territory which lay between the Don and Dnieper rivers, N. of the Co ack country, and which became altogether Ru ian i zed after the partition of Poland.
