In math., that character of a change which consists in a pa age from one point, state, or value to another without pa ing through a continuously infinite series of intermediate points (see infinite ); that character of a function which consists in an infinitesimal change of the variables not being everywhere accompanied by an infinitesimal change (including no change) of the function itself. An e ential discontinuity is a discontinuity in which the value of the function becomes entirely indeterminate.
