Hay market Square Riot

The, a riot which took place May 4, 1886, in Hay market Square, in Randolph street, Chicago, when the police undertook to break up a public meeting of anarchists. A bomb was thrown by some person, supposed to be one Schnaubelt, who has never since been found. By this a ault seven policemen were killed and 27 wounded. Of the anarchists captured, August Spies Adolph Fischer, George Engel, and Albert R. Parsons were hanged Nov. 11, 1887; Louis Lingg, also convicted, killed himself in prison on the day before the execution; Samuel Fielden and Michael Schwab were sentenced to imprisonment for life, and Oscar Neebe was committed for 15 years. The last three were pardoned by Governor Altgeld. A monument marks the spot where the policemen fell. The anarchist sympathizers have erected a monument also.
