Prunus

(pru’-nus) [L.]. A genus of trees of the order Rosaceae. P. domestic a, is the source of the prune. P. serotina, yields wild-cherry bark (Prunus Virgin i an a, U. S. P.), which contains a volatile oil, hydrocyanic acid, tannic acid, a resin, and other substances. It is used as a tonic and sedative in gastric debility and general irritation of the system, and is a common ingredient of cough-mixtures. Preparations:Extractum pruni virginia nae fluidum.
