(Zam-tam in Fr. and Ger. use.) An instr. ot paeee in the form of a large round slightly concave plate or basin of metal (alloy of 4 parts copper to I part tin), with a raised rim. Itis struck with a stick having a padded leather head, and is used in the orchestra to intensify melodramatic effects.
