salicyl (sal'is-il)

The hypothetical oxygenated radicle, C7H5O2, of salicylic and salicylous acids, s'acetic acid. See ace to salicylic acid, under acid. s. acetol. See salacetol. s. aldehyd. Orthohydroxybenzaldehyd, a substance, Ce[H,OH,CHO,H,- H,H,], obtained from the juice of various plants of the genus Spirea, from the larvae of Chrysomelon populi, and in other ways, and occurring as an aromatic liquid of spicy and burning taste. It is said to be antiseptic, s'anilid. 1. A crystalline substance, Q3H11NO2 — CcrL- (OH)CO.NH(CgH5), formed by the action of phosphorus pro to chlorid on a mixture of salicylic acid and anilin heated to 1800 C. 2. A term erroneously used for an anilic derivative of salicylic aldehyd, properly salhydranilid. s'uric acid. See under acid.
