John, an_Anglo-Amerjean scientist, born in England; settled in the West Indies, and later ix Virginia, in the vicinity of James: town, where he devoted himself to the study of botany. He died in 1692. His son, JoHN, born in Virginia, wa: educated in England, and studied law ’ there; became Colonel in the Virginia militia; member of the Virginia As sembly; and prominent in the patri otic conventions of the Revolutionary period; was a Representative from Virginia in the Continental Congre in 1778-1779, and one of the signers of the Articles of Confederation. He died near Hatchers Run, Va., in 1787.
