[Dutch=wampum.] A name for the North American Indian bead money. sew'-el (ew asū), s. [Etym. doubtful. Perhaps for she well, from shew or show.] show. Hunt.: A scarecrow, generally made of feathers, hung up to prevent deer from entering a place. sě-wěl'-ěl, s. [Native name.] Zool .: Haplodon rufus , a small rodent from the west coast of America. It is about a foot long, with a tail of an inch or an inch and a half, brownish above, lighter below. Its habits are approximately those of the Prairie Dog (q. v.). It constitutes the genus An is onyx of Rafinesque, Aplodontia of Richardson, and Haplodon or Haploodon of later writers. Lilleborg makes it the type of a family Haploödontide.
