Feder ation of trades-unions, organized at Philadelphia 1869. It consists of local a emblies, grouped into district a emblies, and these formed into a General A embly of the U. S. Annual meetings of delegates have been held, and the number of members increased, until in 1886 it claimed to have more than half a million. Since then its numbers have been reduced by unsucce ful strikes and internal di ensions, but it still has a large membership and strong organization.
