PELVIS

(Lat.), n. f. Peal'vi2s(wi2s). Gen., pel'veos, pel'vis. From irt\v(, a basin. Fr., ba in. Ger., Becken. 1. The o eous structure formed by the innominate bones, the sacrum, the coccyx, and the ligaments uniting them. It articulates through the sacrum with the vertebral column, and serves as a support for the posterior limbs. 2. The cavity included within these bones. It is divided into a false, or superior, p., and a true, or inferior, p., by a plane pa ing through the promontory of the sacrum, the ilio-pectineal line, and the upper border of the symphysis pubis, the circumference of this plane constituting the inlet of the true p. The lower margin of the true p. is formed by the coccyx, the tube7-osities of the ischia, the ascending rami of the ischia, the descending rami of the o a pubis, and the sacro-sciatic ligaments. Any basin-shaped structure or cavity. Cf. P. of the kidney. Ankylosed transversely contracted p. Fr., ba in ankylose retreci trans ver sale ment. That form of p. in which the inlet is normal while the outlet is contracted. [A, 20.] Contracted p. Fr., ba in retreci (ou vide par etroite e). Ger., enges (oder verengtes) Becken, Beckenverengerung. A p. with any of its diameters below the standard measurement; applied particularly to contraction at the brim. Cordate p. Fr., ba in cord i for me. Ger., stumpfe Kartenherzform des Beckens. The normal form of the pelvic inlet in women of the European races, the ratio of the conjugate to the transverse diameter being as 4 to 5. [A, 20.] Cordiform p.
