CROCKETS

(Fr. crochet, a hook.) In Gothic Architecture, ornaments resembling curved and bent foliage running up on the edge of a gable or pinnacle. They are of two varieties: the earliest are formed by a simple curve turning downwards, as in the gables and spires of Lincolr cathedral; the later have the point of the leaf returned and pointing upwards. Sometimes animals are substituted in the place of leaves. [s. 316]
