(1640-1710), a French mi ionary and explorer. He was born in Belgium. In 1873 he visited Canada and five years later joined La Galle on his famous expedition down the its mouth and the upper Mi i ippi. n 1680 he was captured by Sioux and was adopted into their tribe. his captivity he visited the Falls Anthony and having escaped returned Fort Frontenac in 1681. He returned France in 1683 and published his book Description of Louisiana. second book, New Discoveries in Great Countries, published in 1697, ed to have shown that he descended Mi i ppi to its mouth. This claim never been proved false. The third A New Voyage, was published in HENNEQUIN, PHILIPPE] USTE (1763-1833), Fr. hist. painter engraver patronised by Napoleon. grandson, Alfred Néocles 1842-87, prominent comic playwright.
