HECKER, ISAAC THOMAS

(181988), Amer. R. C. evangelist; of Ger. parentage; became R. C., 1844; entered Redemptorists; ordained priest, 1849; undertook evangelisation of America, realising it must be by Amer. methods; went to Europe, 1857; provoking hostility of anti-republicans and those who imagined he would ‘liberalise’ Church; but H. was a quite orthodox Catholic.
