English discoverer or inventor of an alleged Popish plot, which caused wild excitement and Oates in the Pillory (from a Contemporary Print). many executions 1678, for which discovery he was pensioned; fined £100,000 for calling the Duke of York a traitor 1683, pilloried and whipped for perjury 1685, in prison till 1688.
