Capital of Rutherford co., Tenn., and of the State 1819-26: 33 m. s.e. of Nashville; scene of a battle, "Stone River," Dec. 31, 1862, and Jan. 2, 1863. The Confederates under Bragg withdrew with lo of nearly 10,000 out of 47,000 men; the Union forces and lo were nearly the same. Pop., 1890, 3,739.
