(ra‘be-éz) [L. ra’bere to rage]. Hydrophobia, or ly a, especially that of animals (as dogs, wolves, and cats), communicable to man and other animals, especially by the bite of the rabid animal. See hydrophobia. Τ. can i’na, canine madne ; the rabies of dogs. dumb r., rabies in which paralysis is an early symptom. Yr. feli’na, the rabies of cats. furious r., a form in which there is very pronounced excitement. paralytic r., rabies in which paralysis is a marked symptom— usually an ascending spinal paralysis. sullen r., dumb rabies. tan acetic r., a condition like rabies produced in rabbits by the intravenous injection of the oil of tansy.
