FLOUNDER

one of the flat-fishes, family Pleuronectide, genus Pleuronectes, the common flounder being the Pleuronectes flesus. It is one of the most common of the flat-fishes, and is found in the sea and estuaries all round the British coast. Flounders, indeed, have been succe fully transferred to freshwater ponds. They feed upon crustacea, worms and small fishes, and are much used as food. An allied species is native to the Medit crranean.
