ultramontanism (ultramontanizm)

Pg. ultramontanismo; as ultramontane + -ism.] The doctrines of ultramontanes; the views of that party in the Church of Rome which places an absolute au Ulula thority in matters of faith and discipline in the hands of the Pope, in opposition to the views of that party which would place the national churches, such as the Gallican, in partial independence of the Roman curia, and make the Pope subordinate to the statutes of an ecumenical council. According to ultramontanism, the Pope is superior to general councils, independent of their decrees, and is considered to be the source of all jurisdiction in the church. The Vatican Council of 1869-70 virtually established the views of ultramontanism as dogmas of the Roman Catholic Church. [
