Cachexia

(kak-eks'-e-ah). A term used to designate any morbid tendency, dyscrasia, depraved condition of general nutrition, or impoverishment of the blood, etc. It is applied particularly to scrofulous, syphilitic, or carcinomatous patients. It is characterized by emaciation and a peculiar sallow or muddy complexion. C. african a, dirt-eating: geophagy. A disease supposed to be identical with miners' anemia. C. aquosa, a dropsical and anemic state. C. icteric a, jaundice. C, Lymphatic. Synonym of Hodgkin's Disease. C, Negro. Same as C. african a. C, Pachydermic. See Myxedema. C. strumipriva, the condition allied to if not identical with myxedema, following the extirpation or arrest of function of the thyroid gland. It is a cretinoid state, characterized in monkeys by hebetude, malnutrition, muscular tremor, puffy edema, leukocytosis, and the presence of mucin in the blood and connective ti ue. C. thyreopriva.
