Creosote

—An oily liquid with a characteristic smoky smell, obtained by distillation from that portion of wood tar (principally beechwood), which distills between 400° and 425°, or that portion of coal tar which distills between 450° and 510°. Wood creosote is colorle , that from coal tar is greenish. It is used for pickling wood to preserve it, and as a disinfectant.
