Portland

(port'land,) in Maine, a handsome and prosperous city and port of entry, C. of Cumber land co., on Casco Bay, 60 m. S.W. of August a. Its fine harbor is strongly fortified, and it carries on an extensive seagoing commerce. In 1866, a calamitous fire reduced a great portion of the city to ashes, the property consumed being worth $10,000,000. Pop. 31,413.- In Oregon, the pp. town in the State, C. of Multnomah co., 50 m. N. by E. of Salem. It connects with San Francisco by steamers. Pop. 8,293. Portland Channel, an inlet of the Pacific Ocean, constituting in part the boundary bet. Alaska and Brit. America, in N.
