burlap (berlap)

[Formerly borelap; origin unknown. The form suggests a contr. of ME. borel, E. burrel, a coarse cloth, + lappen, lap, wrap. Referred by some to G. bärlapp, club mo , Lycopodium clavatum, lit. bear's paw (cf. NL. Lycopodium, wolf's-foot), machine for removing knots and rough places from woolen cloth before it is fulled. burlyl (ber'li), a.
